Faux Reading

While current-day selfie culture feels like a weird, new phenomenon, artists have been doing it since the renaissance era. However, it has never been so easy to take a selfie, which is why more and more people are participating in it in this century. One thing the article mentions is what people feel like when they capture an image of themself. It brings out “status, mood, feelings, and essence.” Similarly to nowadays, people would add things to their self-portraits to show their status. One of the paintings showed Durer in a fur coat, symbolizing that he had money. Nowadays people do the same things but with other clothes or something like a flashy car. While the quality and convenience of picture-taking have changed, the themes and moods within selfies have remained the same. The basic premise of capturing a still image of someone and us being allowed to read what they are portraying from the inside and outside has been experienced the same way, since the beginning. As well as the elements, the motivation has also remained the same. From the start, people have always wanted to document themselves. They want to keep memories that they can look at for a lifetime. They also enjoy doing it as a family. Because people grow old and change quick. As long as humans are here, it is fair to say there will be someone taking pictures and appreciating them. While technology may change, the general goals and feelings will stay the same.
